A PLAYGROUND, A BEACH, A NEIGHBORHOOD

The Schel Chelb Playground is another community-led initiative supported by the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation.

The 1.6-acre park west of Lynwood Center on Point White Drive offers a children’s playground, 370 feet of saltwater shoreline, a swimming beach, picnic area and trail link to the extensive Gazzam Lake trails network.

The Schel Chelb playground was designed pro bono by Chris Cain of Studio Hanson|Roberts, who also designed Owen’s Playground. This engaging play space offers a sea serpent and shipwreck theme, and includes a sand pit, stump hop, slide and a boat swing. The playground include locally sourced natural materials.

Schel Chelb Playground was championed by Jim and Vicky Reilly, Schel Chelb Park neighbors. The property was sold to the City of Bainbridge Island in 2008 with the stipulation that it be used as a neighborhood park, but it sat undeveloped for several years. The Reillys founded a weekend community market in Lynwood Center to raise funds, and the Parks Foundation supported the playground through multiple community grants.
