Parks Foundation, BIJAEMA partner for Pritchard Park restoration, documentary film

March 30, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the forced exclusion of Bainbridge Island’s Japanese Americans for wartime incarceration.

To honor this milestone, the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association are partnering on stewardship projects and a documentary film at the memorial site and Pritchard Park.

UPDATE: This campaign is now fully funded.

“The wartime exclusion and welcome return of the island’s Japanese American neighbors is a foundational story of our community,” said Mary Meier, Parks Foundation executive director. “This partnership is about healing both land and people, as we honor a uniquely Bainbridge Island story that resonates into the present day.”

Raise funds, steward parks through Nonprofits Helping Parks

Island nonprofits organizations can earn funds for park stewardship through Nonprofits Helping Parks, sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and Bainbridge Metro Parks.

Nonprofits Helping Parks was started in 2020 to bring more stewardship to local parks while offering incentives and benefits for nonprofit organizations. It works like this: Your club, youth group or nonprofit organization commits to a work party in a public park or along a trail – pulling invasive weeds, for example, or putting in native plants or spreading gravel on trails – and the Parks Foundation will make a donation to your organization to thank you for your time and effort.

A great team-building opportunity and impactful in the community, these work parties bring islanders of all ages together to improve the health and beauty of Bainbridge Island parks and trails.

‘It is spectacular’ – KidsUp! The Next Generation of Play is here, Sept. 4

Chris Cain would tell you, he had the easy part.

Designing KidsUp! The Next Generation of Play, the spectacular, super-inclusive new playground at Battle Point Park, didn’t take much more than brainstorming with parents and suggesting what might go where. Then he stood back and watched.

“My role was really just to put ideas on paper, and get it spatially organized,” says Cain, a landscape architect with Bainbridge Island’s Studio Hanson Roberts. “Normally when we do a design project, it takes months of planning, there’s packages of drawings to deliver… I sat in on meetings and did some sketches here and there.”

Support a memorial bench for pickleball legends

Honor the memory of Bainbridge pickleball legends Anna Fields and Bill Glasser with plaques on the Founders Courts Legends Memorial Bench at Battle Point Park.

Your gift will help fund three brass memorial plaques for Fields, Glasser and other pickleball legends on a new bench at the Founders Courts plaza. More plaques will be added to the bench in the future as prominent Bainbridge pickleballers pass on.
