Gideon Park ivy pull makes ripples across the sea

An ivy pull in tiny Gideon Park is making ripples halfway around the globe.

Students from the Odyssey Multiage Program are raising funds to help young women in the island nations of Melanesia, through the Parks Foundation’s new ParksCorps program – doing well for their overseas peers, by doing good for Bainbridge Island parks.

The students’ volunteer work is benefiting Melanesian Women Today, providing scholarships for girls who would otherwise be denied the educational opportunities kids here take for granted.

“Everyone should be able to learn and have an education,” says Abby Myrick, an Odyssey seventh grader. “I feel like those girls who don’t get to learn there, I just want to help them so they can learn and do stuff with their lives that they want to do. I think that’s important.”

Exclusion Memorial volunteer day gallery

Thank you to the more than 130 islanders who turned out to support community and civil rights at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial volunteer work day, Feb. 19.

Volunteers cleaned the winding memorial wall, trimmed and weeded the grounds, and cleared the ornamental pond of reeds.

It was the biggest-ever turnout for this annual stewardship day.

The event marked the 80th year observance of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which set in motion the forced exclusion of Japanese Americans from Bainbridge Island for wartime incarceration.

From Clarence Moriwaki, Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community: “Thanks to the Parks Foundation for partnering and getting people out. It’s all about that, isn’t it? It’s all about partnerships. It’s all about community. This is really fantastic.”

On March 30, BIJAC will host “80 Years of Healing,” the annual observance of the forced exclusion, with an hour-long program. […]

Parks Foundation, BIJAEMA partner for Pritchard Park restoration, documentary film

March 30, 2022 marks the 80th anniversary of the forced exclusion of Bainbridge Island’s Japanese Americans for wartime incarceration.

To honor this milestone, the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial Association are partnering on stewardship projects and a documentary film at the memorial site and Pritchard Park.

UPDATE: This campaign is now fully funded.

“The wartime exclusion and welcome return of the island’s Japanese American neighbors is a foundational story of our community,” said Mary Meier, Parks Foundation executive director. “This partnership is about healing both land and people, as we honor a uniquely Bainbridge Island story that resonates into the present day.”

Two environmental restoration events launch the project.

On Feb. 19, the Parks Foundation and BIJAEMA co-sponsor a Volunteer Work Day on the annual Day of Remembrance for Executive Order 9066, which authorized the wartime […]

Friends of STO fund supports greenway tree work

Underperforming trees marked for thinning on the STO Winslow Connector.

Tree thinning on the Sound To Olympics Trail heralds a healthier greenway for Winslow’s “linear park.”

Spindly, underperforming and dying trees are being removed along a stretch of the STO’s Winslow Connector, between Winslow Way and the ravine bridge south of Vineyard Lane.

Those remaining trees will enjoy healthier long-term growth, and native shrubs below will thrive better.

“Hotter and drier summers are testing the health of island forests,” says Barb Trafton, Parks Foundation Projects Director.  “The thinning of overcrowded stands of trees by removing spindly, shaded ones allows more air and water circulation for the remaining trees, boosting opportunities for biodiversity along the STO greenway.’

The select thinning was approved by the City of Bainbridge Island. The project is funded through the Parks Foundation’s Friends of the STO Trail Fund, which supports greenway stewardship in […]

Thanks to Bainbridge Beach Cleanup volunteers at Hawley Cove

Thanks to all who turned out Sunday for the sixth annual Bainbridge Island Beach Cleanup at shorelines islandwide.

Hawley Cove Park was the site of a special Escaped Trash Assessment Project, with Sustainable Bainbridge and other island organizations working in partnership with Zero Waste Washington . Volunteers sorted, categorized and logged various trash items found along the driftwood beach and tide flats: plastic, styrofoam, cans and bottles – and the obligatory tire, extracted from the mud flat by Ben Van Patten of Boy Scout Troop 1496.

More about ETAP from Xenia Dolovova, Waste Reduction Program Manager for Zero Waste Washington:

“Zero Waste Washington has been working with the EPA and with partner organizations to develop a standardized litter assessment protocol. As an add-on to existing cleanup events, we are counting, weighing and photographing litter picked up at beaches, parks, along roads, and other public places. We train volunteers, provide needed supplies and […]

Raise funds, steward parks through Nonprofits Helping Parks

Island nonprofits organizations can earn funds for park stewardship through Nonprofits Helping Parks, sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and Bainbridge Metro Parks.

Nonprofits Helping Parks was started in 2020 to bring more stewardship to local parks while offering incentives and benefits for nonprofit organizations. It works like this: Your club, youth group or nonprofit organization commits to a work party in a public park or along a trail – pulling invasive weeds, for example, or putting in native plants or spreading gravel on trails – and the Parks Foundation will make a donation to your organization to thank you for your time and effort.

A great team-building opportunity and impactful in the community, these work parties bring islanders of all ages together to improve the health and beauty of Bainbridge Island parks and trails.

Past participating groups include Bainbridge Island Swim Club and […]
