“Touch the earth, love the earth, honor the earth, her plains, her valleys, her hills, and her seas; rest your spirit in her solitary places. For the gifts of life are the earth’s and they are given to all, and they are the songs of birds at daybreak, Orion and the Bear, and dawn seen over ocean from the beach.” – Henry Beston, “The Outermost House”

In a time of pandemic and social distancing, our precious parks, trails and open spaces – even our own backyards – assume much greater import in our lives. Evergreen forests, open meadows or placid shorelines, in nature we find the solace, reflection and beauty so vital to our wellbeing.

The Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation and our partner organizations invite you to come together – virtually – to honor all that nature provides during Earth Month 2020. Celebrate Trees! Earth Month Bainbridge Island promises awareness, involvement and action for Arbor Day and Earth Day, inspiring us all to protect our trees, our environment, and our planet.

Earth Month activities offer something for everyone, children and adults of all abilities – the active weed puller, the quiet reader, the inquisitive tree hugger, the reflective Earth lover, the conscientious gardener, or the community citizen looking for ways to live more sustainably. Here are just a few ideas:

• Play Earth Month BINGO! Fill a square every day with a fun and enriching Earth Month activity … like planting a pollinator-friendly plant, shrub or tree in your yard! A great family activity.

• Join your fellow islanders in a virtual event. How about this month’s Movies That Matter, “Solar For All,” 7 p.m. April 2. Watch the film online, then hang out afterwards for a discussion via Zoom.

• Read a book that celebrates nature. We recommend “The Outermost House,” Henry Beston’s lyrical account of his year of solitude on Cape Cod, at one with creation and the passing seasons, a classic of the nature writing genre. (And a model of “distancing socially, connecting naturally” for our times.)

• Share your Earth Month adventures with the rest of us. Get outside (safely!) and document your explorations online with the hashtag #EarthMonthBI. You’ll inspire us all.

You can find the Earth Month 2020 Calendar here, with more (virtual) events to be announced soon. Follow Sustainable Bainbridge on social media for prompts to make this a GREAT Earth Month, as we look forward to a day when we can once again gather as one in the company and cause of nature.
