Volunteer for new Conservation Work Parties in island parks

The Park District has launched a new Conservation Work Parties series, tackling the creeping scourge of ivy and other invasive species.

Second Saturdays monthly, volunteers will visit a different park and bring down nuisance vines, uproot Scotch broom, and perform other ecological restoration.

The conservation events are being held in partnership with Weed Warriors, a longstanding advocacy and action group that brings expertise on spurge laurel and other lesser-known problem weeds.

“People are coming because they’re interested in learning more, and applying it to their own properties,” the Park District’s Morgan Houk says. “It’s a learning opportunity as much as a ‘get out and know your parks and volunteer’ opportunity.”

Conservation Work Parties mark a welcome return — and expansion — of volunteer activity in island parks, after a year lost to the pandemic.

The district’s popular monthly Trails Work Parties are […]

KidsUp! Playground will be a bloomin’ wonder

Bright color is nice, and a sweet fragrance. Drought resistance, of course. Bonus points for edibility: What kid wouldn’t want to munch a tasty blueberry after a ride on a merry-go-round?

Flowers and shrubs at the new KidsUp! will have many qualities, but all should withstand the particular rigors of the playground environment.

“They have to be hardy,” Park District horticulturist Chris Andre says, “and they have to endure a lot of trampling by kids.”

Time and the treading of small feet should pose no challenge for the KidsUp! landscaping. Andre and island gardening maven Ann Lovejoy drew from a rich palette of shrubs and herbs, to create a space of sensory delights and add some welcome shade.

Nine new trees dot the playground, including Venus dogwoods, Sugar Tyme crab apples, and vine maples. Four varieties of oregano will provide ground cover, while waves […]

Clark team completes KidsUp! Lookout Pier

Clark Construction is a big-time booster for KidsUp! Playground at Battle Point Park. Clark sponsored the Lookout Pier feature with a $5,000 gift and a pledge of volunteer labor.

After the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District construction team built the pier structure and roof, the Clark team stepped in with volunteer hours to finish the job by crafting and installing beautiful railings all around.

Says Clark Construction: “We were all extremely excited to put our carpentry skills to work and actually build a part of the structure our company donated to the […]

Stewarding the sublime at Halls Hill Lookout

The labyrinth symbol crosses cultures, time and meaning: maze, prison or trap, path of pilgrimage or spiraling journey to inner peace.

Steve Grumm hews to the latter meanings in his spiritual practice, and calls the Halls Hill Labyrinth one of the most interesting and “organic” he has ever experienced.

“It’s a place for stopping, not working, and just ‘being,’” Grumm said. “Every time I walk the labyrinth, I leave in a different place than when I came. Where does this happen? You usually have to go to sacred space like a cathedral to get this experience.”

At least for a day, the Halls Hill Lookout & Labyrinth experience was less about “being” and more about doing. Grumm was among two dozen volunteers who turned out to tend the Lookout grounds, the first-ever stewardship event since the property was donated to the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation earlier this year.

Nonprofits Helping Parks: fundraising through stewardship

Bainbridge Island Ultimate was looking for a fundraiser to support the frisbee club’s events and activities. At Moritani Preserve in Winslow, the west end of the park was choking under the weight of English ivy as invasive weeds overtook the native vegetation.

Opportunity met need one afternoon in February, when about 30 frisbee club members turned out for an afternoon of stewardship at the Preserve.

The club put in two hours of vigorous weed pulling, grubbing out bushels of the noxious plants for haulaway.

For its work, the club received a $600 donation from the Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation.

“This model yielded a triple win,” says Elinor Fanning, Bainbridge Island Ultimate board member. “The student athletes earned community service credits and funds for their frisbee club, the Park District got a truck load of ivy and holly removed, and the entire community will benefit […]
