A REGIONAL TRAIL, A NEIGHBORHOOD CONNECTOR, A ‘LINEAR PARK’

The Sound To Olympics Winslow Connector greets visitors at the Winslow ferry terminal, the first stretch of the STO Trail Corridor envisioned to stretch across the island and the Kitsap Peninsula.

The STO Trail’s first two Bainbridge Island segments – the Winslow Connector and Sakai Pond Connector – now run 1.2 miles north to the High School Road intersection, crossing the highway and into Sakai Park. Future segments are now being planned to continue the trail north to Madison Avenue and beyond.

It’s not just “our” trail. The STO Trail is a local link in the national Great American Rail Trail, a planned contiguous trail route stretching from Maryland west across the nation, across Washington and Bainbridge Island, across the Kitsap Peninsula to the Olympic Discovery Trail, and all the way to the shores of the Pacific.

The Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation is an active partner in planning, growing and stewarding the STO, Bainbridge Island’s first “linear park.” Supported by our dedicated Friends of the STO Trail Fund, we partner with the City of Bainbridge Island, the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District and many others to extend the STO north across the island – promoting safe, sustainable cross-island travel while connecting island neighborhoods, parks and services.

Stewarding the STO on Bainbridge Island

The Bainbridge Island Parks Foundation partners with the City of Bainbridge Island, local landscaper Bart Berg and others on stewardship of the Sound To Olympics Trail on Bainbridge Island.

Through our dedicated Friends of the STO Trail Fund, the Parks Foundation has committed more than $100,000 to annual maintenance along the Winslow Connector. Invasive weeds are removed, and trailsides replanted with Northwest native trees and shrubs. Many hundreds of new plants have been added to the trailsides over the past three years, creating a healthier and more inviting greenway.

STO TRAIL FAQ

The Sound to Olympics Trail has been in the Bainbridge Island and Kitsap County plans for several years, but islanders often have questions about how the STO plan will benefit our community.

What is the Sound to Olympics Trail? Where will it go on Bainbridge?
Who is the trail intended for? Won’t it mainly serve people who live off the island?
Why does the trail have to be so wide? I’ve seen bike trails in other places that aren’t so wide, and they work just fine.
I’ve heard that the trail is so wide because it’s funded with grant money from the federal government.
Why would we want to build a trail next to the highway? Who thinks that is a good idea?
I saw what happened with the first section of the trail, and I’m worried about impacts to the trees along the highway.
Why would the City spend money on the STO Trail when we have other more pressing needs?
How can we justify spending so much money on the trail when so few people are using it?

STO is a regional trail

The Sound To Olympics Trail will link Kitsap communities and key transit hubs like the Winslow and Kingston ferry terminals, crossing the peninsula to the Hood Canal Bridge.

STO is part of the Great American Rail-Trail

The Sound To Olympics Trail across Bainbridge Island is part of the Great American Rail-Trail, a planned 3,700-mile non-motorized route from Washington D.C. to Washington state, Atlantic to Pacific.
