Koura-Yukio Trail
Enhancing neighborhood connectivity near the Grand Forest
The Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation enhanced neighborhood connectivity through the Koura-Yukio Trail, a model of collaboration for new public trails.
This route was long favored by pedestrians and bicyclists between Koura Road and Yukio Lane, and a shortcut to reach the Grand Forest. But a stretch of the popular route was actually a private driveway rather than a designated public trail. The lack of formal public access imposed the adjacent property owner, posed safety concerns and limited its potential as a reliable connector between neighborhoods and the Grand Forest.
Recognizing the importance of this pathway, the Foundation negotiated an agreement with the new property owners to establish a public easement alongside the existing driveway. This easement ensures permanent, safe access for non-motorized users, transforming the informal route into a legitimate public trail. The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District would hold the easement, formalizing its role in maintaining and preserving the trail for community use.
A new 5-foot-wide path was graded and graveled alongside the driveway (which was slightly realigned), creating a clear and safe space for walkers and cyclists. A split-rail fence visually distinguishes the public trail from the private driveway and enhancing safety for all users.
The Koura-Yukio Trail reflects the Foundation’s commitment to fostering safe, accessible, and connected neighborhoods. By transforming a previously informal route into a formal public trail, the Koura-Yukio Trail project exemplifies how thoughtful collaboration can bring trails that serve the community while protecting the interests of neighbors. .
