Owen’s Playground
The island’s first inclusive, barrier-free playground
For too long, playgrounds often left children with disabilities on the sidelines — unable to participate in and fully experience the joy of play with their peers. Bainbridge Island faced this challenge too, with few spaces that welcomed children of all abilities to play side by side.
The Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation helped change that by supporting the creation of Owen’s Playground, the island’s first all-inclusive playground. This vibrant play space that honors the memory of Owen Marshall and celebrates the lives of all children, especially those who benefit from adaptive equipment.
Located in Rotary Park in Winsow, Owen’s Playground is more than a place to play, it’s a family and community hub. With smooth surfacing, adaptive play structures, sensory gardens, shaded seating, and imaginative art, it invites kids and families of all ages and abilities to connect, explore, and belong.
The playground’s design reflects the community’s creativity and compassion. Local artists and designers contributed nature-inspired features that make the space both beautiful and meaningful.
By helping bring this project to life, the Parks & Trails Foundation addressed the need for inclusive recreation on Bainbridge Island. Owen’s Playground now stands as a joyful, welcoming space where understanding grows alongside the fun, and where every child can play.
