Farm Trail makes colorful autumn debut

Long in the planning, Bainbridge Island’s new Farm Trail made a colorful autumn debut against a backdrop of pumpkin patches and grape rows in October.

The half-mile trail runs along the west boundary of the Day Road agricultural district, from Day Road E. to Lovgreen Road. Along the way, trail walkers can enjoy views of rolling, arable fields and some of the island’s most bucolic landscapes.

Completion of the Farm Trail – a three-way partnership of the Parks & Trails Foundation, the City of Bainbridge Island, and Bainbridge Metro Parks – fulfills a longtime plan to connect the Bainbridge Island community more directly with the publicly owned farmland.

“The idea was always that we have a walking trail, so people can see what happens on a farm,” recalls Andy Maron, Parks & Trails Foundation board member, who 20 years ago chaired the City Open Space Commission that helped unify and preserve […]

Welcome Pole Dedication gallery

The Bainbridge Island community joined the Parks & Trails Foundation and City of Bainbridge Island in celebrating installation of the new Suquamish Welcome Pole on the Sound to Olympics Trail on Oct. 25.

The 14-foot, old-growth cedar Welcome Pole by carver Randi Purser represents Chief Seattle’s father, Schweabe (an approximation of his traditional name), who was Suquamish. The Thunderbird atop the figure represents the power of his family. As a new father at the time of first European contact, he is depicted with a frog of the new year, representing a family and a people at the cusp of a time of great change.

The pole crests the Winslow Connector section of the Sound to Olympics Trail, just up the hill from Winslow Way and SR 305.

It’s the ideal place for the Welcome Pole, a physical embodiment of a Suquamish land acknowledgment and an invitation for community members and […]
