Rad! Strawberry Hill Skatepark design to be presented Nov. 17

Get stoked! The Strawberry Hill Skatepark plan is here.

The new skatepark design will be presented to the public at the Nov. 17 board meeting of the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District. The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at Bainbridge Island Recreation Center.

The 16,660-sf. facility at Strawberry Hill Park will feature an expansive, open “street skating” area with ramps, stairs, rails and many other elements typical of an urban skating environment. An undulating “pump track” wraps around the skating plaza, allowing a long, continuous ride through momentum-building curves and bowls.

The park is designed for skaters of all skill levels, and will welcome not just skateboarders but roller and inline skaters and scooters as well.

The skatepark design is by Grindline Skateparks of Seattle, in consultation with a multi-age advisory group of Bainbridge Island skaters. Grindline has designed some 300 skateparks […]

Leafline Trails Coalition launches 900-mile trail vision

Gov. Jay Inslee pedaled the Sound to Olympics Trail on Bainbridge Island, as Leafline Trails Coalition today launched a visionary network with more than 900 miles of trails to safely and efficiently connect communities throughout the central Puget Sound region.

“Nobody’s ever caught frowning on a trail,” Inslee said as he live-streamed his ride up the STO from Winslow Way to High School Road, via a handlebar-mounted camera. “Everybody’s happy, ever notice that? People on trails are always smiling.”

Inslee live-streamed brief comments from the STO trailhead, hailing the regional trails plan as the most exciting mapping project since Peter Puget surveyed Puget Sound in 1792.

There are about 500 miles of trails today in King, Kitsap, Pierce, and Snohomish counties, Leafline says, but there has never before been a concerted effort to create a network that crosses jurisdictional boundaries and Puget Sound.

Currently, 56 percent of the more than 900-mile trail network is […]

Help design Strawberry Hill Skatepark

Strawberry Hill Skatepark is being renovated and expanded, and the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District wants skaters and other park users to help with the design.

The Park District will host a public meeting from 6-9 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 at Strawberry Hill Center. Grindline Skateparks of Seattle will present options for the new park, and take input and ideas.

The expanded skatepark will include a new “street skate” area with curbs, ledges, rails, stairs and other elements typical of an urban skating environment. The design will accommodate users of all ages and abilities, and more types of skating: skateboarding, roller and inline skating, and scooters.

What would you like to see? Take an online survey to vote for your favorite elements, or suggest features of your own.

The 20-year-old Strawberry Hill skate bowl, recognized as one of the best in the Northwest, will be refurbished as part of the project.

BIJAEMA 80th year observance March 30

Join Survivors, dignitaries, and community leaders as we commemorate the forced removal of the first Japanese Americans to be evacuated from the West Coast during World War II. Shortly after the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, Public Proclamation No. 4 launched the forced evacuation and detention of Japanese American residents on a 48-hour notice. The Japanese Americans of Bainbridge Island were the first group to be evacuated to a partially constructed camp at Manzanar in the Southern California desert.

Speakers at the event include Governor Jay Inslee (a resident of Bainbridge), survivor Frances Kitamoto Ikegami, 4 student leaders from Woodward Middle School, as well as a roster of community leaders. The Commemoration will conclude with a reading of the 276 names on the Exclusion Memorial Wall. View the full Program here.

The event will be livestreamed via the BIJAEMA Facebook Page. BIJAC requests that people consider attending […]

Exclusion Memorial volunteer day gallery

Thank you to the more than 130 islanders who turned out to support community and civil rights at the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial volunteer work day, Feb. 19.

Volunteers cleaned the winding memorial wall, trimmed and weeded the grounds, and cleared the ornamental pond of reeds.

It was the biggest-ever turnout for this annual stewardship day.

The event marked the 80th year observance of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which set in motion the forced exclusion of Japanese Americans from Bainbridge Island for wartime incarceration.

From Clarence Moriwaki, Bainbridge Island Japanese American Community: “Thanks to the Parks Foundation for partnering and getting people out. It’s all about that, isn’t it? It’s all about partnerships. It’s all about community. This is really fantastic.”

On March 30, BIJAC will host “80 Years of Healing,” the annual observance of the forced exclusion, with an hour-long program. […]

Finding the way to a new park at Waypoint Woods

The Winslow ferry zone is the last place you might go looking for it, but Karl Petersen sure finds it in nearby Waypoint Woods: peace and quiet.

Maybe it’s the depth of the shadows, the twisting path that always keeps you a little off kilter, that keep the tiny woods off Olympic Drive a place apart even as the great and busy world thrums past.

“The path is crooked, and you never see very far ahead. Unless the sun is out and bright, which it normally is not, you don’t know which direction you’re going,” said Petersen, a neighbor who’s been tramping Waypoint Woods for a decade and still finds it fresh for discovery. “You keep making turn after turn after turn, and a lot of the turns are pretty dramatic. You never know where you are in that place. I find that enchanting.”

The […]
