Trillium Trail Run returns May 11

Run for the trails! The Trillium Trail Run 10K/5K and Kids’ Fun Run returns to Bainbridge Island Saturday, May 11, a benefit to acquire, build and maintain new Bainbridge Island trails.

Runners and walkers will enjoy a scenic course from Battle Point Park, along the Forest to Sky Trail, looping among the great firs of the Grand Forest and over scenic Hilltop meadow. Kids can enjoy a FUN RUN as part of the morning activities.

The event is hosted by the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation.

Earth care book displays, April 1-30, at the Bainbridge Public Library and Eagle Harbor Books – Learn more about individual and systemic actions that are restorative to a healthy planet by perusing and perhaps borrowing or buying books from the displays at the library and bookstore.

Prevent Food Waste display, April 1-15, Bainbridge Public Library – Food tossed in the trash is one of the biggest causes of methane emissions from landfills. Check out the lobby display case created by Kitsap Solid Waste for tips on making food last and using it up before it goes bad.

Dr. Howard Frumkin shares the “Superpowers of Our Parks and Trails” April 25, for youth, family health and wellness 

Our parks and trails deliver an astonishing range of physical and mental health benefits – and the science behind this nature-health connection has blossomed in recent years.   

Join us as Dr. Howard Frumkin presents “Superpowers of Our Parks and Trails,” a dynamic presentation for families and parents at 7 p.m. April 25 at the Bainbridge High School Theater. The event is co-sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation and Bainbridge Youth Services.

Dig Deep! Strawberry Hill Bike Park campaign launches, March 22-24

Dig deep! The Strawberry Hill Bike Park campaign launches March 22-24 with a weekend of events for families and riders of all ages, sponsored by the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation.  

Proceeds from all events support construction of the island’s first-ever dedicated bike park at Strawberry Hill Park for riders of all ages. The 8-acre bike park will feature 1.5 miles of riding trails with challenging features like jumps, flyovers and berms. A special skill-building area will welcome new riders or those honing their bike riding skills.  

The Parks & Trails Foundation and Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District hope to break ground on the Bike Park this fall. The Foundation is about halfway to the $450,000 fundraising goal, and donors at all levels are encouraged to give today to support the Bike Park.

Conservation Work Party

Where: Blakley Harbor Park, NE Country Club Road

When: Saturday, Feb. 10 and March 9 (2nd Saturdays), 10:00a-12:00p

What:  Join the Park District, IslandWood, and the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation every second Saturday this winter in the ongoing restoration of Blakley Harbor Park! Thousands of volunteer hours have already been logged, helping transform the site of the former largest mill in the world. Volunteers will help remove invasive species, spread mulch to discourage regrowth, and plant native species where invasives have been controlled.

Well suited for children ages six and up who are comfortable using small hand tools and walking off trail on uneven surfaces.

What: Join the Park District, Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, Gear Grinders, and the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation this fall, preparing the site of the future mountain bike park for new trails and features. Projects will include removing invasive species, building habitats, and planting native plants.

Well-suited for children ages six and up who are comfortable using small hand tools and walking off trail on uneven surfaces.

Join us for Moritani Community Picnic, Sept. 4

Tasty gourmet picnic boxes are available for purchase at this year’s Moritani Community Picnic, 4–6 p.m. on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 4 at Moritani Preserve.

Local band WHOZYAMAMA returns with their spicy brand of Cajun and Creole music for this relaxed, end-of-summer celebration for the entire family. The event is free!

New this year: Purchase a delicious, gourmet picnic box from island caterer Fig & Spice to benefit the Preserve. Each picnic box for one includes naan bites with an array of fresh, Mediterranean-style dips; an organic tabbouleh salad; salted tahini chocolate chip cookies; and choice of kombucha or premium sodas.

Picnic boxes are $40, with all proceeds benefiting the restoration and stewardship of Moritani Preserve. Pre-order is over, but a limited number of boxes will be available at the event.

Be part of the mix on National Trails Day, June 3

Be part of the mix – the trail mix! Celebrate Bainbridge Island trails with a fun and healthy hike on National Trails Day, Saturday, June 3. 

While you’re out, pick up the newly updated Trails on Bainbridge Island map at Hilltop (Grand Forest) and lower Fort Ward Park from 10 a.m. to noon, hosted by the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation. The large-format color map includes Bainbridge Island’s 48 miles of public trails, as well as nearby dining, services and other amenities for park and trail users. 

Learn more about the Parks & Trails Foundation’s work to expand and enhance the island trail network, including the cross-island Lost Valley trail. The Foundation will also hand out its trail mix.
