Strawberry Hill Bike Park build is underway

The guys from Shire Built construction were on the scene just a few hours, and already the contours of Strawberry Hill Bike Park were taking shape.

The first jump, fashioned from a scavenged boulder mounded over with dirt. The first of countless berms, the banked, earthen curves that will propel riders through progressive “racing lines” around the course. The first 30 or 40 yards of the mile and half of chute-like trails that soon will serpentine down and around the wooded hillside.

“You’ve already gone from there to there?” an onlooker asked.

Shire Built trail builder Spencer Baldwin shrugged off the fast start.

“No time wasted.”

“With a coffee break,” added builder Scott Scamehorn. “Heck yeah!”

Heck yeah, indeed. Long sought by local riders, the island’s first-ever dedicated bike park is under construction at Strawberry Hill. A summer opening is […]

Summer opening possible as Strawberry Hill Bike Park breaks ground

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Strawberry Hill Bike Park broke ground this week, and a summer opening is possible with $95,000 in fundraising left to complete the project.

The island’s first ever-bike park will feature more than 1.5 miles of wooded trails, challenging hillside jumps, berms and flyovers, and skill-building areas for young riders.

It is being built on 8 acres at Strawberry Hill Park near Winslow.

Gifts to complete the Bike Park can be made at www.bikestrawberry.org

Oceanside Construction of Bellingham and Shire Built earth movers on Monday began sculpting bike trails into the hillside. The firms have previously built the acclaimed Galbraith Mountain and Bellingham Harbor bike parks.

The Strawberry Hill Bike Park course was designed by local riders and Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, a regional bike park designer.

Parks office returns to Strawberry Hill, thanks to Foundation, park expansion

The Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District has officially relocated its administrative offices to a newly repurposed building on the east side of Strawberry Hill Park. This move marks a significant milestone in the Park District’s ongoing efforts to improve facilities for staff and better serve the community.

The new office at 7686 NE High School Road is part of a larger expansion of Strawberry Hill Park, which received a $1.1 million grant from the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation in April 2024. This grant funded the acquisition of a 9-acre parcel formerly owned by Comcast, located along High School Road. The lightly wooded property expands the park’s footprint, bringing its total size to 38 acres.

The newly repurposed office building was originally Northland Cable and later the Bainbridge Island Broadcasting station. The structure was initially deemed unsuitable for renovation. After acquiring the property, […]

Parks & Trails Foundation funds 9-acre addition to Strawberry Hill Park with $1.1M gift

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND — A $1.1 million grant from the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation has funded a 9-acre addition to Strawberry Hill Park.

The grant funds acquisition of the former Comcast property on High School Road by the Bainbridge Island Metro Park & Recreation District.

The lightly wooded property is adjacent to Strawberry Hill Park along its east boundary, making it a natural acquisition to expand the park.  A concept planning process for the newly expanded park is now underway.

The Comcast property expands Strawberry Hill Park to 38 acres, following the acquisition of another adjacent 10-acre parcel, the former Hayashida property northwest of the park, in 2022. That property was acquired for the planned Strawberry Hill Bike Park and an expanded dog park.

Strawberry Hill Park has now more than doubled in size, from […]

Forest thinning underway at Strawberry Hill

Even a skinny tree makes quite a WHUMP when it hits the ground.

As we are there to hear it, an age-old philosophical question remains unsettled. In any case there are the echoes, reverberating through the misty morning and across the island to herald that forest thinning at Strawberry Hill Park has, in fact, begun.

WHUMP.

“It’s a shocking sound for such a small tree, isn’t it?,” reflects Lydia Roush, Parks Superintendent for Bainbridge Metro Parks. “But they’re so dense, and Douglas fir is heavy.”

It’s a first-of-its-kind project on the island: restoring an overdense, profoundly unhealthy forest through aggressive thinning and strategic replanting, while at the same time carving out chute-like paths for the new bike trails that soon will criss-cross down the hillside.

About 40 percent of the trees are coming out. In the shadow of those […]

In the news: ‘Overpasses a safety feature at BI bike park,’ Bainbridge Island Review

Bainbridge Island Review

Jan. 5

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Overpasses over intersections help vehicles get from one place to another safely, and the same will be true at Bainbridge Island’s new mountain bike park.

They are planned as a safety feature to help the flow of cyclists on the trails. But bike committee member David Maron said they’re more than that. “The idea of creating artistically designed overpasses is very important to making it feel like a special place,” he said at a recent meeting of the Bainbridge Island Metro Parks & Recreation District.

Parks Natural Resources manager Lydia Roush said staff has been working with Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance to design the park. The committee has hosted two community walk-throughs, and one more is planned. They will also be working with the BI Parks & Trails Foundation to fundraise. The bike park will be located on the 10-acre parcel west of Strawberry Hill Park; land […]

Plans rolling along for mountain bike trails at Strawberry Hill Park in Bainbridge Island

NATHAN PILLING | KITSAP SUN

Dec. 21, 2022

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND – Mountain bikers could soon be whizzing down a network of trails on a forested property at Strawberry Hill Park.

A $1 million donation funded the Bainbridge Island Metropolitan Park District’s purchase of the site last year, and plans for new bike and dog park areas began to move ahead. The Evergreen Mountain Bike Alliance, hired to do design and construction work on the new bike park, presented a look at designs at the district’s board meeting last week. The group detailed plans for crisscrossing trails of varying difficulty levels with skills areas and other specially designed features.

Lydia Roush, natural resources manager for the park district, noted to board members that the site has previously […]

X-Country, Bainbridge Island Ultimate dig in, dig out at Strawberry Hill

A happily common sight of late: youth volunteers pitching in to restore the 10-acre addition at Strawberry Hill Park, future site of the Strawberry Hill Bike Park. Latest to lend their energy and talents are Bainbridge Island Cross-Country. The club harriers rooted out ivy and holly, supporting a healthy forests initiative by Bainbridge Metro Parks.

BI Ultimate also joined the list of local clubs who’ve been putting in volunteer hours at the Strawberry Hill Bike Park site through the Parks & Trails Foundation’s ParksCorps program. The club earned funds for their activities by doing two hours of invasive removal, restoring the land and forest.

Great job, Bainbridge Island Cross-Country and Bainbridge Island Ultimate!
