Waypoint Woods is a new gateway park between The Waypoint and the Waterfront Trail in Winslow. The Parks Foundation is partnering with the Park District and Washington State Ferries (land owner) to transform this parcel into a native woodland park laced with trails. The first phase of work is underway, with two Parks Foundation supported programs making the initial improvements to the 3-acre parcel. The Student Conservation Corps, supported by the Parks Foundation since its pilot year in 2010, worked over the summer to remove invasive ivy and holly from the woods. With a grant from the Bainbridge Community Foundation, the Trails Crew forged a loop trail that begins near the anchor on Harborview Drive. The new trail, offering views over Eagle Harbor, is now open for visitors to get a preview of the possibilities. Look for additional improvements to come over the next 18 months, including an expansion of the trail, connecting the current loop with The Waypoint on Olympic Drive and with the ravine bridge near Waterfront Park. Waypoint Woods will enhance this gateway to Winslow, providing a lovely, forested shortcut for both islanders and visitors to enjoy.
