Fay Bainbridge Sand Volleyball Court
Supporting summertime fun on the beach
The Bainbridge Island Beach Volleyball group began as a Facebook community to promote the sport and organize games at the old sand court at Fay Bainbridge Park, then the island’s best venue. Participation grew, with approximately 90 club member and regular play several times a week. The court also served campers, students training for school volleyball teams, and visiting players. Demand quickly exceeded the capacity of the park’s single volleyball court.
As use increased, the facility’s shortcomings became apparent: a hard playing surface, excessive dust during the dry months, outdated netting equipment. The club came to the Bainbridge Island Parks & Trails Foundation about funding a new court at Fay Bainbridge, with professional-grade beach volleyball sand, new poles and nets, and ball-stop netting around the court perimeter. They applied for and earned a Parks & Trails Foundation Community Grant.
The Sand Volleyball Project was completed in 2020, transforming the game at Fay Bainbridge. The upgraded courts expanded recreational opportunities for residents and visitors alike, with a safer and more enjoyable playing environment. It takes advantage of the park’s existing amenities: beach access, ample parking, restrooms and picnic areas. The project fosters community connections, encourages outdoor recreation, and offers an accessible venue where players of all ages can gather and play.
